The Cottage
This project is the sensitive refurbishment and modernisation of a historic Suffolk cottage. The brief focused on significantly improving the home’s environmental performance while retaining its character and connection to landscape.

Energy upgrades included external wall insulation (EWI), solar panels, and an air source heat pump. Alongside this, the interior was fully reworked to improve flow, light, and spatial connections, creating a more cohesive sequence of rooms with a strong relationship to the garden and surrounding countryside.
To improve circulation, the staircase was repositioned, opening up the winter living room and study. These spaces are now centred around the original fireplace, which also serves the dining room. The upper stair was largely retained, as its configuration already provided an effective distribution of bedrooms.
The kitchen and dining spaces were reconstructed to address a previously cold, single-glazed elevation and a lack of natural light. The new, more generous kitchen connects seamlessly to the dining area, anchored by a striking glass-to-glass corner window that frames views of the landscape and the expansive Suffolk skies.
The project incorporates a Pluck kitchen, Maxlight glazing, Accoya replacement sash windows, bespoke joinery, and tiles from Claybrook and Ketley. A bold colour palette, combined with bespoke upholstery by Polly Granville, creates a warm, characterful interior—resulting in a cosy yet highly efficient contemporary reinterpretation of a classic English country cottage.
The exterior is clad in Nakamoto Yakisugi Suyaki black charred timber, with bright turquoise windows and accents providing vibrant pops of colour throughout the space. This transformative project has revolutionised Carrie's ceramic practice, enabling her to create within the serene confines of her garden and inspiring her to embark on a kitchen renovation in the main house. This collaboration not only enhanced her workspace but also enriched her daily life, blending the beauty of nature with the art of design.
